What is a Cognitive Assessment?

A Cognitive Assessment provides a detailed profile of how a child thinks, learns, and processes information. Using gold-standard tools such as the WISC-V, our psychologists measure reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and processing speed. These results guide decisions about learning support, enrichment opportunities, and future planning.

Cognitive Assessment Procedure

1. Initial Intake Interview – 1–1.5 hours

  • Parent/guardian interview (child may attend if appropriate).

  • Gather developmental, medical, family, and school history.

  • Clarify concerns about learning, behaviour, or strengths.

2. Questionnaires – ~1–2 hours (scoring & interpretation)

  • Completed by parents and teachers where relevant.

  • Focus on learning, attention, executive functioning, and behaviour.

  • Common tools: BASC-3, BRIEF2.

3. Teacher Interview

  • Phone consultation with classroom teacher.

  • Provides observations of learning style, classroom behaviour, and academic strengths or challenges.

4. Direct Assessment Sessions – 2–3 hours

  • Typically completed across 1–2 sessions.

  • Standardised testing using WISC-V or other measures.

  • Evaluates:
    • Verbal comprehension
    • Visual-spatial reasoning
    • Fluid reasoning
    • Working memory
    • Processing speed

5. Report Writing & Integration – 4–6 hours

  • Detailed written report integrating test data, history, and teacher feedback.

  • Provides clear explanation of cognitive strengths and challenges.

  • Includes tailored recommendations for school and home.

6. Feedback Session – 1–2 hours

  • Review results with parents (and child if appropriate).
